VolkerFitzpatrick to expand Port of Felixstowe in UK

Published 15 September 2017

Hutchison Ports has awarded a contract to VolkerFitzpatrick for the latest phase of expansion of Port of Felixstowe.

The expansion is expected to increase Felixstowe’s ability to handle the world’s largest container ships. Under the contract, VolkerFitzpatrick will take up the design and construction of 13 hectares of paved container yard behind Berth 9.

The work includes reclamation of 3.2 hectares of seabed behind the finger pier, and this work is scheduled to be completed by early 2019.

The new container yard will comprise 10 container blocks and allow six-high stacking. The yard will add stacking capacity of 18,000 TEU to the 130,000 TEU already available at the UK’s largest container port.

Felixstowe was the first port in the UK to handle the latest class of 18,000+ TEU ships in 2013.

It continues to handle more such traffic than any other port in the country. On September 14, 2017, the port handled its 100th mega vessel of the year when the 18,270 TEU Matz Maersk arrived at the port from Bremerhaven.

Hutchison Ports executive director Clemence Cheng said: “Berths 8 and 9 were the first berths in the UK built to accommodate the latest class of ultra-large container vessels. The creation of additional container storage will allow us to optimize container handling operations between the berth and its supporting yard and further enhance the service we offer to our customers.”

Port of Felixstowe is located on the southeast coast of the UK and is the largest and busiest container port in the country. Berths 8 and 9 will provide additional deep-water capacity for the world’s largest container ships.
