Samskip buys US freight forwarder Rimar Consultants

LBR Staff Writer Published 21 April 2017

Samskip Logistics has acquired US-based freight forwarder Rimar Consultants for an undisclosed sum.

Based in New Jersey, Rimar Consultants provides full-container transport and shipping services for the customers of frozen food, seafood and meat sectors.

The acquisition allows Samskip to expand its refrigerated food transportation services, including focusing on US seafood and meat exports.

Rimar offers freight cargo shipping solutions such as ocean export services and full container load services (FCL).

Other freight shipping solutions include bill of ladings, letters of credit, certificate of origins, automatic export system (AES) direct filling and reefer services.

Under the deal, Rimar staff will be shifted to the New Jersey office of Samskip.

Samskip Logistics CEO Ásbjörn Gíslason said: “The merger of Rimar's activities into Samskip Logistics USA will bring indirect cost savings, better procurement, and scale economies.

“Rimar has strong relations with key carriers, truckers and trans-load vendors, and this will strengthen procurement and benefit Samskip Logistics network volumes.

“Timing for a deal is also favourable, given a strong outlook in this market for 2017. Integrating processes will be straightforward because the operational and documentation approaches are similar.”

In 2014, Samskip had secured a 50% stake in Norway-based Silver Sea, which operates 14 reefer vessels that are traded in the North Atlantic, Baltic, North Sea and Black Sea.

With operations in 24 countries of Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia, Samskip provides logistics services through land, sea, rail and air.
